Rosacea treatment with IPL
What is the cause of rosacea?
Rosacea is a very unpleasant skin condition that affects many people today. The intense erythema, red bumps, vessels and inflammation on the face, nose, forehead and chin typically develop over the age of 40, but can also occur in younger adults.
As well as being a frustrating aesthetic problem, rosacea is a serious skin condition. For this reason, it is recommended to deal with it from the first signs, as symptoms can worsen and become very difficult to treat later on. Rosacea is usually caused by genetic factors, hormonal changes or lifestyle and dietary problems. It can also be caused by gastrointestinal diseases, blood pressure problems and bacterial infections.
Rosacea cannot be completely cured, but with the right treatment, it can be significantly reduced and the unwanted redness can be minimized. IPL is a gentle but effective solution to treat rosacea!
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for rosacea
IPL treats rosacea with short pulses of light. The key to IPL's success is that the handpiece can generate high-energy over an extremely wide wavelength range - 570-1200 nm. This allows us to customize the treatment according to the skin type, skin problem and individual sensitivity.
Safe and precise treatment
The precise light penetrates the deeper skin layers without damaging the surface, making the procedure extremely safe. Once it reaches the surface of the skin, the IPL's energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in the red blood cells, which stops unnecessary circulation in the damaged blood vessels and eliminates the disturbing vasodilatations.
Award-winning technology
Candela's Nordlys™ system was voted "Best Energy Device of the Year" at the 2022 Aesthetic Awards.
Up to immediate improvement
The effect of the treatment:
- the walls of the dilated blood vessels will contract,
- the redness of the face is reduced,
- skin tone is improved,
- and a more even complexion is achieved.
Procedure
The skin surface is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and potential birthmarks are covered. A cooling gel is then applied to the treated area to minimize the discomfort associated with the treatment.
The IPL treatment uses a broad spectrum of flashlight, which penetrates the deeper layers of the skin. The energy is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the red blood cells, causing the walls of the dilated blood vessels to shrink, allowing the circulation to flow and the body's natural metabolism to eliminate the damaged cells.
The light beam may cause a warm and slightly stinging, burning sensation in the treated area, but the treatment is generally pain-free.
At the end of the treatment, the cooling gel is wiped off and a soothing cream is applied along with a broad spectrum SPF. The patient must wear protective eyewear during the treatment.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have more questions?
IPL treatment can also be a solution for mild or severe rosacea.
It is recommended in the following cases:
- small capillaries, red spots, fine blood vessels on the face, nose, chin, neck or chest,
- red, inflamed nodules on the cheeks,
- thicker, purplish capillaries appear,
- redness is accompanied by extra dryness of the skin,
- extensive erythema in response to heat and temperature changes,
- In response to stress, alcohol, sport, severe redness appears on the face, which disappears very slowly.
IPL treatment is suitable for lighter to medium skin types. For creole or darker skin tones, a previous consultation is required to determine what other treatment is suitable for treating rosacea.
Rosacea is a skin condition that can't be cured entirely with any medication or other treatment, but with professional IPL treatments and proper skin care you can manage your symptoms and keep your skin problem under control. Depending on your individual skin condition, we usually recommend 3-6 treatments, complemented by a home skincare routine. A significant change usually requires 3 treatments.
Repeat treatments every 4 weeks until the desired effect is achieved, according to your individual treatment plan. One maintenance treatment (1-3 sessions depending on the current condition) per year is recommended. Treatments should be scheduled in the winter or autumn months to protect the skin as much as possible from the sun.
After the treatment, you may experience mild erythema, swelling and sunburn-like redness in the treated area, but these will disappear on their own within a few days. As a result of the treatment, the red/bright colored small blood vessels may turn purplish/bluish or grey as a result of the treatment.
During and after the treatment period, it is very important to protect your skin from the sun: a sunscreen with at least SPF 50 is recommended daily. Exercise should be avoided for 2 days after the treatment. Avoid saunas and hot baths for 10 days after the treatment due to the risk of capillary damage. In addition, products containing acids and alcohol based and also scrubs should not be used on the treated area for at least 2 weeks and make sure to moisturize and hydrate the skin with specific skin care products.
Solariums and sunbathing are not recommended during the treatment, moreover as UV radiation has a major impact on rosacea, we recommend avoiding them completely.
In addition to the treatment, it is worth introducing a dedicated skincare routine for rosacea to maintain the desired effect. You may also need to make lifestyle changes: smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress and a sedentary lifestyle can have a significant impact on rosacea.
Avoid sun exposure, self-tanning products and solariums before and during treatment. The treatment cannot be performed if the skin is tanned, whether it is natural or artificial, so make sure to protect the skin from sun/UV exposure. A few weeks before the treatment, the use of retinoids and acidic exfoliants should be suspended to prevent hypersensitivity of the skin. If you are using any previously prescribed creams or medications to treat rosacea, make sure to write them down and bring them to the consultation.
The treatment is not recommended in case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin disease, febrile illness, medical conditions, sun allergy and taking photosensitising medication. In addition, it is important to note the following about the treated area:
- it cannot be tattooed (with the exception of the lip contour, and eyebrows),
- you must avoid mechanical or chemical peels for 2 weeks before the treatment,
- laser skin treatment should not be applied to the skin for at least 1 month prior to the procedure.
