Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmented lesions most often develop as a result of UV radiation exposure, but other factors can also contribute, such as hormonal changes or other skin problems. When treating hyperpigmentation, there are different skin care products, medical cosmetic procedures or medical treatments that can be used to fade or remove the spots.

What leads to the development of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, discolorations?

Hyperpigmentations are dark discolorations on the skin which, although completely harmless in most cases, can be aesthetically unpleasing.

Natural pigments in our bodies are responsible for the color of our eyes, skin and hair and protect us from harmful UV rays. The pigment that gives us our skin color is called melanin and plays a vital role in protecting the skin. Certain external and/or internal factors can cause the pigments to be overproduced, causing excess melanin to accumulate unevenly in the skin and so hyperpigmentation occurs. This happens mainly when skin protection is compromised. Sometimes pronounced brown spots appear mainly in the areas most exposed to UV radiation: the face, neck, chest and arms.

This is no coincidence, as sun damage can play a major role in the development of age spots/sun spots. Increased UV exposure can lead to the development of pigmentation disorders more easily, even years later. It's not just over-exposure to the sun that can cause problems, solarium use can also cause pigmentation issues.

Hormonal changes can also play a role in the appearance of darker patches, for example, melanin production can be affected during pregnancy or menopause, and the resulting dark brown patches are called melasma.

Pigmentation can occur as a side effect of certain medications, chemicals (e.g. perfume) or after healing from inflammation of the skin, usually a reddish patch, which then turns brown. This is a condition known as PIE and PIH (Post Inflammatory Erythema and Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation), where melanin production may be increased locally in the inflamed area as the skin's defense system is activated. Sometimes it can also be caused by internal organ diseases, and sometimes by long-standing mechanical effects.

In general, as we age, the chances of getting hyperpigmentations are higher, as the skin's regenerative processes become slower, the natural balance can be disrupted and normal functions can be compromised. This can be further provoked by other external (e.g. UV radiation) and internal (e.g. hormonal) influences.

So how do you get rid of these hyperpigmentations?

ZO® Skin Health - Skincare consultation

Conscious skin care and correct sun protection play a huge role in preventing hyperpigmentations and treating existing skin problems. The majority of all pigment spots are caused by UV radiation, which not only creates unpleasant lesions on the skin but is also responsible for the visible signs of aging, wrinkles and sagging.

During the consultation, your skin condition will be assessed and a personalized treatment plan will be created to establish the correct skin care routine to prevent and reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
