Dry, sensitive skin

Dry, sensitive skin is characterised by tightness, redness, itching and irritation caused by both external and internal factors. It is essential to normalise the problem through a proper skin care routine, barrier-building and barrier-repair treatments, a good lifestyle and, if necessary, appropriate check-ups.

Why does dry, sensitive skin develop?

Dry, dehydrated and oily skin is a basic skin type, while sensitive skin is a condition. The development of skin sensitivity is always associated with damage to the skin's barrier, which is extremely fragile for people with dry skin.

In order to effectively alleviate the uncomfortable dry and tight sensation, environmental and lifestyle factors need to be addressed, as a damaged skin barrier layer is not only caused by lower sebum production. Besides sebum, other water-binding factors, such as ceramides and NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), help to maintain the skin's moisture content.

When the barrier layer is damaged, our skin is more exposed to environmental factors and pathogens. Essentially this is why dry skin is also more prone to developing increased reactions. So the core skin problem is often combined with sensitivity, irritation and even inflammation.

Dry skin can be both oil-deficient and water-deficient. Skin that feels dry, rough to the touch and tight is typically both. However, oily skin can also be dehydrated (water-deficient), but oil-deficient skin is more often associated with dehydration. Dry, rough, dehydrated skin develops when the skin produces less sebum than the ideal amount. This also reduces the skin's ability to retain moisture. This is called alipic skin type. It can be predominant from a young age, but typically becomes more pronounced with age due to hormonal changes.

Dry skin can be caused by both external and internal factors. External factors include incorrect skin care routines, environmental influences, taking certain medications (e.g. diuretics, antihypertensives) and exposure to UV radiation.

Internal triggers can include genetic factors, age, hormonal influences, improper diet and certain diseases or conditions such as diabetes or hypothyroidism.

Dry skin is often sensitive and irritated, so it's worth seeking professional advice to prevent more serious skin problems and to find a truly effective, long-term solution. In addition, dry skin can also be caused by more serious conditions such as hypothyroidism, dermatitis or psoriasis, which should also be investigated.

In most cases, dry skin responds well to lifestyle and skin care changes, but in severe cases, a special prescribed cream may be necessary.

Intraceuticals oxygen therapy

Hydration is particularly important for dry, sensitive skin. Hyaluronic acid, naturally occurring in the skin, is responsible for keeping the skin hydrated. As we age, the level of hyaluronic acid begins to decline, the skin loses moisture and as a result it loses its firmness, leading to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. An effective solution to this problem is the so-called Hyaluronic Layering, which is the basis of Intraceuticals skin care system. During this process we infuse the skin with 3 different molecular weights hyaluronic acid to deliver extensive hydration. The different hyaluronic molecules revitalize, replenish and protect the skin.

Juvederm Volite deep hydration

A particular problem with dry skin is that the use of different creams can only provide superficial hydration, as the deep connective tissue layers are not reached by the right active ingredients. Juvederm Volite's cross-linked hyaluronic acid filler, specifically developed for deep hydration, is able to bind moisture in the deeper layer of the skin for long-lasting hydration, enhancing skin firmness and elasticity. It not only provides an overall hydration but also stimulates collagen production in the long run.
