Acne-prone skin

When treating acne, we can take a very complex approach because in most cases it is worth treating this skin problem from several angles. After establishing a proper skin care routine and lifestyle, we also put a lot of emphasis on eliminating inflammation, repairing any hyperpigmentation and scars, and identifying internal problems.

What leads to the development of acne?

Acne-prone or blemish-prone skin is one of the most common skin problems that not only occurs during puberty, but often affects adults, both men and women. Acne is caused by excessive sebum production. This causes the sebaceous ducts to clog and, as a result of the blockage, bacteria overgrow, causing severe inflammation and infection of the skin.

Acne can be caused by a number of factors, including hormonal problems, genetic factors, the use of incorrect skin care products, the consumption of certain foods, food intolerance, bacterial overgrowth and inadequate lifestyle.

In most cases, acne appears first at puberty as a result of hormonal changes. For example, increased production of androgenic hormones (e.g. testosterone) increases sebum production, which can lead to acne.

However, menstruation, pregnancy, menopause and the use of the contraceptive pill or other hormonal contraceptive methods can also cause changes in the body that can lead to acne. Oily skin (seborrheic skin), as a basic skin type, has an increased tendency to develop acne. Hormonal problems and stress or an incorrect skin care routine can cause extra sebum production, which, along with bacteria and dead skin cells on the surface, can be a trigger for acne and inflamed nodules. Malnutrition also plays an important role in the development of acne. The consumption of processed foods and foods containing high levels of fat and processed sugar, as well as dairy products, are often responsible for acne. Various food allergies or intolerances can also cause inflammation in the body that eventually manifests itself as acne on the skin.

The development of acne

The overproduced sebum leads to blocked/clogged pores where so-called anaerobic bacteria (e.g. P.acnes) multiply in an oxygen-poor environment, causing inflammation in the sebaceous gland. Depending on the extent of the inflammation, it can also cause long-term damage to the skin's function and structure. After the healed acne, atrophic scars and dents may remain, and the red and brown discolouration caused by the inflammation may be visible on the skin surface for months or even years.

What can we do about acne-prone skin?

Dietetic consultation Dietetic consultation

Dietetic consultation

As acne is often caused by improper diet and various food allergies and intolerances, a dietician can also help you create a proper meal plan that can reduce excessive sebum production and minimize inflammation.

Dermatological examination

Although acne is not a dangerous skin condition, it affects a lot of people today and unfortunately in many cases it can become very aggressive and severe. If you are experiencing long-lasting or recurring inflamed nodules, it is worth visiting a dermatologist for a medical consultation and examination, as in some cases, it may be necessary to take prescribed medication to reduce the inflammation. This may help to avoid the development of scars or other skin lesions.

IPL active acne treatment

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) technology is a highly effective and impressive treatment for acne-prone skin. IPL emits light in several different wavelengths, ranging from 400-1200 nm, so you can customize the entire treatment according to your skin type and sensitivity. IPL penetrates to the second layer of the skin (dermis) without damaging the upper layer (epidermis). It reduces sebum production and skin inflammation, kills bacteria and supports the body's natural regeneration.

Meso-botox

Not many people know it, but botox also plays a huge role in the treatment of oily skin. In a technique known as meso-botox, botulinum toxin is injected into the top layers of the skin at a dilution of five to ten times the normal dose. Botox reduces the excessive production of sebum and significantly improves the condition of acne and blackheads. The treatment results in a more even complexion and less visible pores.

Steroid injection treatment

The scarring caused by acne cannot be improved in many cases by superficial treatments, creams or silicone sheets. However, scars can be visibly faded with a course of steroid injections. The treatment involves injecting a special steroid into the scar tissues which results in a smoother surface, a softer , less prominent scar. The tightness and itchy sensation associated with the scar is also reduced.

Acne scar removal

If scars remain after acne cysts, they should be treated professionally. In most cases, atrophic scars develop due to underproduction of collagen. These scars are indented in comparison to the skin surface resulting in pits. Sometimes hypertrophic or keloid scars may also form, which are the result of overproduction of the collagen and so they protrude from the surface of the skin. Today, ablative or non-ablative laser treatments are an excellent way to reduce the scars left by acne.In an ablative treatment, a fractionated laser evaporates the majority of the damaged scar tissue (but not all of it) to trigger intense regeneration and increased collagen production, allowing the skin surface to fully renew itself. In a non-ablative treatment, the high-energy laser light causes micro-injuries in the deeper layers of the skin, which are practically invisible on the skin surface. This allows the skin's natural self-healing process to start: the production of collagen and elastin is intensified. In our clinic, we often combine treatments to achieve the best results, by creating a personalized treatment plan that includes a skin care protocol in combination with professional procedures.
