Surgical Nail Removal and Nail Edge Excision
An ingrown toenail is one of the most common yet particularly uncomfortable foot conditions. When the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, it can cause pain, swelling, inflammation, and infection with pus formation, making walking and wearing everyday footwear difficult. Surgical excision of the nail edge offers an effective, long-lasting solution for recurring symptoms. In cases involving a severely damaged, deformed, or persistently inflamed nail, complete nail removal may also be necessary. The procedure aims to relieve pain and inflammation, helping you return to comfortable, pain-free movement.

A Long-Lasting Solution for Ingrown Toenails
During nail edge excision, the portion of the nail that has grown into the surrounding skin is removed as a narrow strip, extending down to the nail bed. The procedure is performed by our specialist according to an individualised treatment plan.
The affected part of the nail matrix, which is responsible for nail growth, is also treated. This helps prevent the nail edge from growing back into the skin and reduces the risk of recurrence. The procedure is performed by our experienced surgical specialist.
Following the excision, the nail will be narrower but will retain a natural appearance.
Complete Nail Removal
If the nail is severely damaged due to injury, fungal infection, or chronic inflammation, our specialist may recommend complete nail removal. A new, healthy nail will grow in its place. For toenails, regrowth generally takes 6–12 months.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Before the procedure, our specialist will examine the nail and determine whether nail edge excision or complete nail removal is indicated. The toe will then be cleaned, disinfected, and anaesthetised with a local anaesthetic injection at its base.
Once the area is numb, the ingrown nail edge or the entire nail will be removed, and the wound will be covered with a sterile dressing.
For the first few days after the procedure, limiting pressure on the affected area and wearing comfortable, loose-fitting footwear are recommended. Complete wound healing generally takes 2–4 weeks, during which follow-up appointments will be arranged to monitor the healing process.
