Laser scar treatment

Unwanted scarring can be transformed into almost undetectable with laser revision!

Laser treatment for unappealing scars

Scars of various sizes can develop on the skin during the natural healing process of the tissues, which can be the result of injuries, physical impact, inflammation or even surgery. Skin regeneration varies from person to person: in addition to genetics and the circumstances that caused the scar, the healing process can also be affected by the area of the body where the scar is located.

In the first 6-12 months after scarring, the surface of the scar may be reddish in color and prominent but it will slowly shrink and fade over time. Scar formation is a long process, and the surface of the scar may change for several years.

If scars are causing a visual or functional problem, it may be a good idea to have the skin lesion removed. Scars cannot be completely eliminated, but modern laser technology can be used to gently but effectively improve their appearance, making them almost undetectable through the skin regeneration process triggered by the treatment.

Remaining scars from surgery, acne or accidents can be easily eliminated with laser treatment, book your appointment for a medical aesthetic consultation for more information!

What are the different types of scars?

Scar formation can be caused by a variety of reasons and accordingly, different types of scars can form on the surface of the skin.

Atrophic scars
Atrophic scars are caused by a lack of tissue regeneration and loss of underlying fat, which means that during the healing process the skin has not been able to regenerate the necessary amount of fiber and fat tissue, leaving an indented, sunken scar on the surface of the skin. These scars are typically caused by chicken pox or severe acne.

Hypertrophic scars
Hypertrophic scars emerge from the skin, caused by a dysfunction in the healing process, which triggers an overproduction of tissues. These scars can be reddish in color and stiff, hard and in many cases even painful due to their inflexibility. Hypertrophic scars do not grow beyond the original wound edges. They can be caused by burns or even surgery.

Keloid scars
Keloid scars are similar to hypertrophic scars, but they can overgrow the existing wound site, resulting in more extensive tissue overgrowth. The scars are darker than the surrounding skin surface, thick and irregular, and may itch and be painful. They usually develop several months after the injury.

Precise and safe laser treatment

Depending on the type and condition of the scar, we use different scar revision treatments - CO2 fractional laser treatment or non-ablative laser treatment - both of which work on different layers of the skin. If necessary, the treatments can be combined to achieve a comprehensive effect, or other complementary procedures can be used to make the process even more effective (e.g. radiofrequency or microneedling using active ingredients). Laser treatment triggers the natural regeneration of the tissues: the laser stimulates the production of collagen and elastin fibers, the damaged area is renewed and the skin surface is evened out. Scarred skin becomes smooth, firm and healthy.

Laser scar revision helps to reduce scarring with precision and safety.

In the course of a personal consultation, we will create a personalized treatment plan which we will use for your sessions. We can even offer a combination of treatments to achieve the desired result: we coordinate medical and aesthetic procedures with your at-home skin care routine.

We recommend the procedure especially in the following cases

  • Post-acne scars
  • Surgical scars that have not healed aesthetically
  • Scars caused by an accident
  • Atrophic scars
  • Hypertrophic or keloid scars

Procedure

Before the procedure, the skin is prepped for the laser treatment. We thoroughly clean and disinfect the area and then we use a numbing cream.

We follow the treatment protocol in your individual plan: the exact course of treatment may vary depending on the laser technology. The laser is moved across the skin, the high energy of the laser light breaks down the scar tissue and stimulates new tissue regeneration.

At the end of the treatment, a special soothing cream and also sunscreen is applied to the treated area. We will provide detailed information on the aftercare protocol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Laser scar treatment is recommended in the following cases:

  • reduction of acne scars and pigment spots,
  • the removal of scars resulting from trauma and residual scars from chickenpox,
  • fading of surgical scars,
  • treatment of hypertrophic keloid scars.

The final effect of the treatment will not be immediate, it may take up to 4-6 months for cell regeneration and collagen synthesis, i.e. the whole regeneration process to take place.

After laser scar treatment, scars do not disappear completely from the skin's surface, but they become much less conspicuous, blend in better with the skin's surface and, in the best case, become virtually invisible. The scars will be softer, more beautiful and the unevenness of the skin will be reduced.

Depending on the type of scar, several treatments may be needed, usually a series of 3-6 suitable treatments. There should be a break of 4-6 weeks between treatments. Between sessions, special care should be taken to ensure adequate sun protection of the treated area.

Recovery time can vary depending on the type of treatment: recovery can be between 1-10 days. Swelling and redness of the skin surface may occur after the treatment. The treated area should be cared for according to the post-treatment instructions, and make-up should be temporarily avoided for facial treatments. Avoid strong sunlight, sauna and solarium for 4-6 weeks after treatment.

Avoiding sun tan beds and sun exposure before treatment is advisable.

The treatment should not be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, active skin infection or febrile illness. In addition, laser scar treatment should not be performed while taking photosensitising or blood-thinning medication.
