Gentle Superficial Removal of Skin Growths (Shave Biopsy)
A shave biopsy is a quick and minimally invasive procedure used to obtain a tissue sample from raised skin lesions or remove them entirely. Its purpose is to establish an accurate diagnosis through histological examination and rule out the possibility of a malignant lesion. During the procedure, the lesion is carefully shaved off using a thin, sharp instrument held parallel to the skin surface, eliminating the need for a deep incision or stitches. This technique is particularly suitable for examining raised moles, warts, and other skin growths on the face, neck, torso, or limbs.

A Quick and Gentle Solution
A shave biopsy is a minor procedure performed under local anaesthesia and typically completed within a few minutes. It does not require stitches or an extended recovery period. The procedure can serve both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, as small, superficial lesions can often be completely removed during the sampling process. The procedure is performed by our experienced specialist. The treated area generally heals within 1–2 weeks, and in most cases, no noticeable scar remains.
Accurate Diagnosis, Informed Decisions
Many skin lesions cannot be reliably distinguished by visual examination alone, which is why histological examination is recommended whenever there is uncertainty. The tissue sample is sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis, and based on the results, our specialist will recommend any necessary further steps. Please note that not all lesions are suitable for a shave biopsy. If a deeper or potentially malignant lesion is suspected, our specialist may recommend complete surgical excision instead.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Before the procedure, our specialist will examine the lesion and determine whether a shave biopsy is the most appropriate method. The skin will then be cleansed, disinfected, and locally anaesthetised. Once the area is numb, the lesion will be carefully removed parallel to the skin surface. Any bleeding will be controlled, and the wound will be covered with a sterile dressing. No stitch removal is required, and you will generally be informed of the histological results within 1–2 weeks.
