Tumor marker packages

Tumor markers are substances or molecules in blood, urine or tissue samples that may indicate the presence or the risk of cancer. Regular tumor marker tests allow early detection of cancerous degenerations before symptoms appear. This provides the opportunity to diagnose tumors at an early stage and treat them more effectively, thus contributing to prevention and a better prognosis. It is important to note, however, that tumour marker tests are only part of the overall diagnostic process and positive results require further investigation and specialist assessment.

Tumor marker packages

About the package

Our screening package may therefore in some cases reveal the presence of tumours in the body that are more likely to affect women. It includes the laboratory measurement of the most basic tumour markers that are elevated in liver, ovarian, breast, colon and lung lesions. It includes the calculation of the ROMA score, which is an indicator of the risk of developing ovarian cancer in the case of a palpable pelvic mass.

The tumour markers tested are AFP (e.g. liver cancer, embryonal tumours), CEA (e.g. intestinal tract, some bronchial tumours), CA 15-3 (breast cancer), CA 125, HE4 (ovarian cancer), faecal blood (colorectal cancer). A negative result does not rule out the presence of a tumour with absolute certainty. A positive value does not necessarily mean a malignant tumour, in which case further tests and a visit to your doctor are needed to find out the cause of the elevation.

Who is it for?

The tests are recommended primarily for our female patients with a family history of cancer or with symptoms of uncertain origin that suggest the possibility of a tumour. Tumour marker tests are generally (with some exceptions) not suitable for screening clinically asymptomatic healthy people for cancer according to the rules of the medical laboratory profession. Variation in tumour marker levels is more informative in the follow-up and monitoring of the treatment of patients with confirmed tumours and in the monitoring of possible clinical progression of the tumour.

How to prepare for the test?

Arrive for the test on an empty stomach, which means fasting for 12 hours (water is recommended).

About the package

This panel contains a broader range of tumour markers that can be used to diagnose a number of tumour types in some cases. As part of our package, we are looking at tumour markers associated with lesions in the liver, colon, lung, ovaries, breast, pancreas, stomach and bladder, as well as melanoma malignancies. And the ROMA score calculation provides a high probability of predicting the risk of developing ovarian cancer. The tumour markers tested are AFP (e.g. liver cancer, embryonal tumours), CEA, CA 19-9, CA 72-4 (e.g. gastrointestinal, pancreatic, some bronchial tumours), CA 15-3 (breast tumours), CA 125 and HE4 (ovarian tumours), Cyfra 21-1 (e.g. (e.g. bladder tumour), S100 (e.g. melanoma), NSE, TPA (e.g. some bronchial tumours or any tumour), faecal M2-PK and faecal blood (colorectal cancer).

A negative result does not rule out the presence of a tumour with absolute certainty. A positive result does not necessarily mean a malignant tumour either, in which case further tests and a visit to your doctor are needed to find out the cause of the elevation.

About the package

Our testing package can therefore help to detect the presence of certain cancers in the body that are more likely to affect men. It includes laboratory measurements of the most basic tumour markers that are elevated in liver, testis, prostate, colon and lung lesions. These are AFP (e.g. liver cancer, testicular tumours, embryonal tumours), CEA (e.g. intestinal tract, certain bronchial tumours), PSA (prostate tumours), HCG (e.g. testicular tumours), faecal blood (colorectal cancer).

A negative result does not rule out the presence of a tumour with absolute certainty. A positive result does not necessarily mean a malignant tumour, in which case further tests and a visit to your doctor are needed to find out the cause of the elevation.

Who is it recommended for?

We recommend the panel primarily to our male patients with a family history of cancer or with symptoms of uncertain origin that suggest the possibility of a tumour.

About the package

The Prostate Package includes PSA (prostate specific antigen), which is an indicator of prostate health, as well as other laboratory tests that can be used to characterise general health. Prostate diseases include acute and chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic enlargement and malignant prostate cancer. Symptoms of these diseases may also have similarities with complaints and symptoms associated with other diseases (e.g. cystitis, sexually transmitted diseases), such as frequent urge to urinate, difficulty in passing urine, bloody urine, painful urination. It is important to emphasise that prostate malignancies often cause no symptoms at all, so timely investigation is essential. We recommend that if you experience any of these symptoms, you should consult a specialist who can order the necessary laboratory tests.

Who is it recommend for?

Prostate cancer is the second most common malignancy in men. The incidence increases with age and there is a family history of the disease. It is highly curable if detected at an early, asymptomatic stage, which is why screening is of paramount importance. Screening (specialist examination and PSA test) is recommended every year from the age of 45. Because of the importance of screening, the Prostate Package is recommended for men over 45 years of age who are asymptomatic or have the symptoms listed, and for men with a family history of the disease. The Prostate Package also provides information for men, regardless of age, who are experiencing the symptoms described above and would like to get an accurate picture of the underlying problems.

How to prepare for the test?

Fasting blood sampling is recommended (fasting for 12 hours, no solid food, water recommended). Blood sampling should be done before or weeks after urological tests (rectal prostate examination, biopsy), as these tests affect the PSA level. Because of its effect on the development of the PSA level, ejaculation should not occur in the 24 hours prior to sampling. Please bring a sample in the appropriate collection container for urine testing (first urine sample in the morning, midstream).

About the package

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Hungary (the number of patients per 100 000 people in Hungary is double the European average), so it is very important that everyone should be screened regularly. Contrary to previous experience, today it is not only found in middle-aged and elderly people, but also in an increasing number of young adults. Who is it recommended for?

The screening package is highly recommended for people with some of the key risk factors:

  • smoking
  • sedentary lifestyle
  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • inflammatory bowel disease
  • consumption of refined foods and low fibre intake
  • over 50 years of age

How to prepare for the test?

The package includes a stool blood and M2-PK test. Accordingly, two separate stool samples (in two different special containers) are required to perform the test. A sampling device for the stool blood test can be purchased from a pharmacy. Only the special sampling tube provided by the laboratory is suitable for M2-PK sampling and detailed instructions for use are provided. The device can be collected at the sampling point. The sample must be delivered to the laboratory within 24 hours. No special diet is required prior to M2-PK sampling. Make sure that stool does not come into contact with water or urine during sampling. Please note that dilute stools are not suitable for testing.

  • Stool blood
  • Calprest NG Eurospital (Calprotectin quantitative test)
