What causes unwanted hair growth?

Growing a lot of body hair is the nightmare of every woman. In addition sometimes severe or rapid hair growth on the face and body occurs because of genetic factors or medical causes.

There are two main forms of increased body hair:

Hypertrichosis is defined as excessive hair growth anywhere on the body in either males or females. It usually has a hereditary tendency.

Hirsutism is a condition in women that results in excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male-like pattern — face, mustache, chest, stomach and back. With hirsutism, extra hair growth often arises from excess male hormones (androgens). The female body also produces androgens (e.g. testosterone) naturally but their physiological level is rather low.

This condition affects about 10% of women. Beside having excess hair, its features include balding around the forehead and temple, the appearance of pimples and acne, irregular menstrual cycle, the voice getting deeper or obesity of the male type (androgen fat distribution).

There can be several underlying conditions of a higher-than-normal testosterone level, like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), Cushing syndrome, CAH (congenital adrenal hyperplasia), etc.. Hirsutism can be a secondary symptom of insulin resistance and thyroid disorders too. It also can be triggered by some anti-epileptic drugs, corticosteroids (inhaled or systemic), some medication for rheumatoid arthritis and hormonal contraceptives. Stress can cause hormonal imbalance too and eventually induce excessive hair growth.

If you have unwanted excess hair it’s important to find a specialist who precisely searches for the underlying reasons and is able to give you adequate medical advice. In case of finding out that the condition is developed as a symptom of hormonal imbalance or an illness, then starting a proper treatment plan is a necessity. A. effective therapy usually includes some lifestyle changes and medications which builds a great foundation for the aesthetic procedures.

Some traditional ways are: shaving, waxing, epilating, the usage of hair removal creams or at-home IPL devices. Unfortunately these methods cannot provide a permanent solution against hair-growth.

Permanent laser hair removal

Permanent laser hair removal

Our professional aestheticians use the extremely effective combination of DEKA Again Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers which is considered to be the gold standard of medical laser technology. With this unique, flexible dual-wavelength system we can perform the treatment with impressive precision to maximize efficacy in dermatological application. The cumulative laser emission allows to deliver an amount of energy at lower power pulses that leads to hair destruction in deep skin layers with greater efficiency and safety than conventional methods. It's ideal for all phototypes from Fitzpatrick 1-5, including thick dark hair and fair or light hair also. You don’t need to worry about folliculitis, burns, hyperpigmentations or ingrown hairs even if you have sensitive skin.

It’s important to know that the laser is only effective on hairs in the anagen (growth) phase. That’s why for a comprehensive, long-lasting result 6-9 sessions are needed. Following this first stage of the treatment it’s suggested to repeat the process 1-3 times annually. The technique is suitable for treating the face, arms, back, legs, armpits and even the pubic area.
