What causes under-eye circles?

During the natural aging process - starting from the mid-twenties - the skin produces less and less hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin, which means that the skin loses its hydration, elasticity and firmness gradually.

The area around the eyes is a highly sensitive and particularly critical area, where the skin is very thin and its anatomy makes it more vulnerable to environmental damage and oxidative stress. This is why aging typically manifests first on the eye area in the form of tiny wrinkles and sagging, less elastic skin and puffiness, which optically contribute to the appearance of dark circles.

In addition to the hollowed appearance, discolouration of the under-eye area can also develop, which can further compromise the overall look. This can be the result of improper metabolic and circulatory processes. The pigments called melanin are locally overproduced and they tend to accumulate, resulting in darker, brown and even grayish toned spots.

The hollowness and sagginess of the lower eyelid may be accompanied with the appearance of under eye bags over time, caused by oedema, puffiness or the appearance of small fat deposits under the eyes. This problem can be further amplified by genetic predisposition and other factors such as stress, lack of sleep, excessive consumption of stimulants, inadequate diet (e.g. excessive salt intake), low fluid intake, smoking, all-day monitor use, UV exposure.

The aging of the skin is a completely natural process that affects absolutely everyone. However, with conscious skin care, a good lifestyle and professional treatments at the right time, the first signs can be delayed by years and the progression can be significantly slowed down. There are also plenty of medical aesthetic and surgical solutions to remove dark circles under the eyes.

What can we do about dark circles?

Fillers for under eye circles

With hyaluronic acid fillers, under-eye circles and wrinkles can be eliminated in a single treatment and the results can last for up to 6-12 months. Dermal fillers are also popular because they are non-surgical, can be performed on an outpatient basis with just a few injections and give extremely fast results. In our clinic, we use Juvéderm® fillers, a world-leading brand with only premium quality fillers.

Hyaluronic acid injected under the skin plumps up the under eye area, rebalances the facial structure, eliminates under-eye circles and wrinkles, and leaves the face looking youthful, rested and refreshed. The premium fillers contain low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate the skin and restore its vibrant complexion. The lower molecular weight hyaluronic acid boosts collagen and elastin production in the skin, restructuring tissues. The high molecular weight hyaluronic acid helps to firm the skin, the cell regeneration and skin renewal.
