Laser treatment for fungal nails

Laser therapy is the cure for hard-to-kill toenail fungus

Uncomfortable, closed shoes, predisposition to infections and stress can all be responsible for the appearance of toenail fungus. Nail fungus is not only very unpleasant, it can also spread very quickly. The pathogens penetrate deep into the tissues and if it is not treated in time, it is very difficult and time consuming to get rid of it.

The most common symptoms of toenail fungus:

  • The nails thicken, split and become stratified.
  • The nails change color, with white or yellowish stains appearing on them.
  • Nails become difficult to cut, sometimes separating from the nail bed.
  • The fungus can cause the feet to smell unpleasant.

In addition to pharmaceutical methods, laser treatment can now be used to remove the fungus safely and permanently. The laser kills the fungus completely, so you can go about your daily life with healthy nails again.

Get rid of uncomfortable toenail fungus safely and painlessly, come in for a consultation and learn all about laser treatment for toenail fungus!

A reliable technology: nail fungus laser treatment with the DEKA Again laser machine

The ND:YAG laser operates at a wavelength of 1064 nm, which has two modes of action when treating nail fungus.

  • The laser light is absorbed directly into the fungal cells and filaments, killing the cells.
  • The heat generated by the laser energy kills the fungus in the nail plate indirectly.

For nail fungus treatment, we use DEKA Again's state-of-the-art technology, voted the world's best laser machine at the AMWC (Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress) in Monaco in 2022.

Prevention is the key

The treatment is extremely safe, killing the pathogens without damaging healthy parts of the nail or the surrounding tissue. The laser procedure has no side effects or complications and therefore no recovery time. It is very important, however, to disinfect shoes and socks thoroughly after the laser treatment to prevent the possibility of re-infection.

Prevention is the key

Procedure

A series of treatments is started with a personal consultation with a specialist, during which they will assess the condition and severity of your nail fungus and set up a treatment plan.

The first step in nail fungus laser treatment is to clean the skin and nails and disinfect the area thoroughly. The fungus causes the nail plate to thicken, which makes it difficult for the laser light to reach the root of the infection, so we gently file the nails down.

The prepared nails and surrounding areas are treated with a high-energy laser: the laser light is focused over the infected areas. The wavelength of the laser is absorbed by the fungal cells, causing direct destruction of the affected cells. Meanwhile, the heat generated by the laser light also helps to kill fungal colonies in the nail plate.

During the procedure, the laser causes the treated area to heat up and may create a sensation similar to a warm pinch, but it is essentially painless. A special cooling device is used to cool the treated area to prevent the skin from overheating. The patient must wear protective eyewear throughout the treatment.

Laser treatment is recommended if symptoms of nail fungus occur. The following symptoms can be used to identify the problem:

  • Thickened, stratified nails,
  • the nail becomes fragmented, deformed or darkened,
  • an unpleasant odor around the nails,
  • white or yellowish stains appear on the nails.

Before nail fungus laser treatment, it is very important to remove any nail polish or gel and to file the thickened nails down. However, you should not cut the nail or use any topical products on the affected nails for 4 weeks. Bacterial sampling of the nails is done prior to the treatment to make sure of the existing fungal infection.

You should bring a new pair of clean socks and a fully disinfected pair of changing shoes to the treatment to prevent re-infection.

The number of treatments may vary from person to person. The extent of the nail fungus and the condition of the nails will determine the number of sessions. We generally recommend 4-6 treatments, which are carried out on a weekly basis.

The effect of the treatment will be visible within 2-6 months, depending on whether it concerns the toenails or the nails on the hands.

In the first 1-2 days after the treatment, the nails may be more sensitive, possibly experiencing a sensation of warmth, but these will disappear within a few days, basically the individual sensitivity will determine the degree of the symptoms. After 1-2 days, it is safe to use (new) nail polish again.

After nail fungus laser treatment, it is very important to disinfect shoes and socks that have been used previously. Even after the healing process is complete, constant care of the nails and feet should be maintained to prevent and to avoid re-infection.

The treatment should not be used in case of pregnancy, breastfeeding or in case of any open inflammation or injury in the treated area.
