IPL Photofacial for Hyperpigmentation

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation, caused by sun damage or remaining from an injury, is completely harmless but can be aesthetically disturbing. IPL treatment is an effective and safe way to eliminate the appearance of prominent hyperpigmentation on the skin.

The substance that is responsible for our skin colour is called melanin, which plays a crucial role in protecting the skin. Due to certain external and/or internal factors, overproduction can occur, causing excess melanin to accumulate unevenly in the skin and result in hyperpigmentation. Prominent brown, grey, red or pink hyperpigmentation mainly appears on the face, neck, décolleté, hands and arms.

Why does hyperpigmentation develop?

When hyperpigmentation occurs, the cells in the skin are damaged because the skin's ability to protect itself is compromised, resulting in an overproduction of melanin.

There are several reasons why it may develop:

  • Sun damage,
  • Excessive solarium use can also cause pigmentation problems,
  • Hormonal changes in the body (e.g. pregnancy, menopause) can cause melanin production problems,
  • It occurs as a side effect of certain medications,
  • It develops as a result of skin inflammation, acne,
  • It is caused by an internal organ disease (e.g. thyroid problems),
  • It occurs as a result of aging, It is caused by chemical or mechanical impact.

Personalised treatment

Depending on the skin type and the skin problem, IPL therapy can be personalized accordingly: between 570-1200 nm wavelengths can be used to work on different layers of the skin. Different wavelengths can be used to treat different pigmentation problems such as age spots, freckles, sun damage.

Pigmentation removal by IPL treatment

IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatment uses short bursts of pulsed light to deliver high-energy to the treated area. The pulses of light can cover an extremely wide range of wavelengths.

Award-winning technology

Candela's Nordlys™ system was voted "Best Energy Device of the Year" at the 2022 Aesthetic Awards.

Safe and effective

The IPL technology is based on the fact that the light energy emitted is absorbed by the body's own melanin (pigment cells) and converted into heat in the skin, causing the molecules to explode. Hyperpigmentation fades or even disappears completely after treatment. It is a very safe procedure, as the light only work on the deeper layers of the skin, without causing any damage to the skin's surface.

Safe and effective

The first step is to thoroughly clean the treated area and cover any birthmarks. The IPL handpiece operates with a broad spectrum flash light. The light energy penetrates the depper skin layers and gets absorbed by the pigment cells, where it is converted into thermal energy and essentially breaks down the melanin cells.

The IPL pulses may cause a stinging, burning sensation in the moment or a warm sensation due to the thermal energy in the treated area. For this reason, a cooling gel is applied to the surface of the face at the beginning of the treatment to reduce the discomfort caused by the procedure.

At the end of the treatment, the cooling gel is wiped off and a soothing cream is applied along with a broad spectrum SPF. The patient must wear protective eyewear during the treatment.

IPL treatment is recommended for people with various types of hyperpigmentation, as it can even completely eliminate them. The treatment can help in the following cases:

  • hyperpigmentation due to acne,
  • hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage,
  • age spots,
  • hormonal hyperpigmentation,
  • pigmentation problems from surgical scars, injuries.

IPL treatment is suitable for lighter to medium skin types. For creole or darker skin tones, a previous consultation is required to determine what other treatment is suitable for the problem in addition to/instead of IPL.

During the IPL treatment series, you should pay extra attention to UV protection. As IPL treatment is primarily used on fair/medium skin, it is also advisable to avoid artificial or natural tanning prior to treatment. It is important not to use certain skin care products (e.g. retinol, acid based exfoliants) for a few weeks before the treatment, as they can lead to hypersensitivity of the skin in combination with the treatment.

A series of 3 to 6 sessions is required to remove hyperpigmentation. After the third session, you will notice a visible change in your skin. A home skin care routine should be incorporated to ensure the best results.

A break of at least 4 weeks should be taken between treatments to allow the skin enough time to regenerate. In between sessions, it is important to ensure sun protection and it is advisable to schedule treatments in the autumn and winter months. It is recommended to repeat the treatment once a year.

After the treatment, you may experience mild erythema, swelling and sunburn-like redness in the treated area, but these will disappear on their own within a few days. As a result of the treatment, the hyperpigmentation will temporarily darken and redden (even turn gray/black), and after a few days it will peel off and fade or even disappear completely.

During and after the treatment period, it is very important to protect your skin from the sun: a sunscreen with at least SPF 50 is recommended daily. Avoid saunas and hot baths for 10 days after the treatment. In addition, products containing acids and scrubs should not be used on the treated area for at least 2 weeks. A special soothing product is recommended after the procedure and it is important to have an hyperpigmentation-specific home routine. Solarium and tanning are not allowed during the treatment. After treating hyperpigmentations on the hands, it is very important to either use gloves covering the hands or apply a heavy layer of SPF50 sunscreen if you are using UV lamps for manicures.

The treatment is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin condition or inflammation, are suffering from fever, epilepsy, cancer, certain chronic diseases, sun allergy or are taking photosensitising medicines. In addition, it is important to remember about the area being treated:

  • it cannot be tattooed (with the exception of the lip contour, and eyebrows),
  • you must avoid mechanical or chemical peels for 2 weeks before the treatment,
  • laser skin treatment should not be applied to the skin for at least 1 month prior to the procedure.
