What factors cause folliculitis?

The inflammation of the follicles is called folliculitis and it’s one of the most common dermatological conditions. The bacterial or fungal inflammatory process is caused by an incorrect hair growth mechanism. The hairs stuck under the skin surface and cause red, burning, itchy bumps with yellowish white pus-filled pockets in the middle.

Folliculitis is a frequent skin condition among women and men. For women, the most common places of occurrence are the legs, pubic area and armpits. In most cases men have it on their cheeks, chin, and in the beard area.

The most common underlying reason is the bacterial, viral or fungal overgrowth. Staphylococci and Streptococci infections have the highest risk but there are other Gram-negative bacteria which can also induce an inflammatory response. Beside the before mentioned, parasites and other pathogens like yeast or herpes simplex virus are considered provoking factors too.

Folliculitis has a lot of known predisposing factors: e.g. incorrect hair removal techniques, bad hygiene, tight clothes or inadequate or irregular face- and bodycare routine. The weakened immune system, diabetes, atopic eczema, excess sweating or sebum production also increase the risk of the development, but inflamed follicles can occur as a side effect of antibiotic medications too.

The best therapeutic methods for folliculitis depend on the type and severity of the condition. Mostly the usage of disinfectant detergents is enough if the condition is superficial. In severe cases applying topical antibiotics and antifungal medications may be needed. In addition, You need to pay special attention to practice a correct skincare routine and hair removal technique and regularly sanitize the required tools.
