Diabetology consultation

The role of a diabetologist is to diagnose and treat metabolism disorders, most importantly diabetes. The two main types of diabetes, known as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, are very different in their etiology, yet there's a lot of overlap in their treatment in practice. In addition, insulin resistance, which is not a metabolic disease on its own, but is often seen as a symptom.

Diabetes mellitus

One of the fastest growing diseases of this century is type 2 diabetes mellitus. This metabolic condition is mainly lifestyle-related: the amount of food ingested cannot be sustained by the body's insulin-producing capacity, resulting in the depletion of the pancreas hence the insufficient insulin production. This metabolic state becomes very similar to type 1 diabetes, the uptake of sugars into the cells being inhibited resulting in the rising of blood glucose levels. This has a toxic effect on the body and cells can get deprived. In severe cases, insulin therapy may become necessary. Fortunately, with the right involvement and lifestyle changes, this condition can be managed. You can always rely on the experts at our clinic.

Insulin resistance

Insulin resistance is also common in the XXI. century which usually accompanies other diseases. You can turn to our specialists for help if you have newly discovered insulin resistance as well.

Insulin resistance is a metabolic disease, in which the body’s production becomes ineffective and the cells are not responding adequately to the insulin’s presence. This abnormal condition can cause many health problems and diseases on the long run. We commonly see this disorder as part of PCOS or as a component of metabolic syndrome.

Type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, in which the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas are attacked by the body's immune system. It is usually present from a young age and has no known cure. In rare forms, adult onset may be seen. Although healthy lifestyle modifications and attention to a healthy diet are recommended for these patients, insulin therapy is the key to managing the disease.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have more questions?

Not necessarily. The answer to this question is always dependent on individual conditions, but for people with type 2 diabetes, insulin treatment is often avoidable.

In case of type 1 diabetes, diet is unfortunately not a viable option, insulin therapy is necessary. Type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance can be well managed with a healthy lifestyle.

Some laboratory parameters are usually needed in the diagnosis of metabolic disorders such as OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) with insulin and commonly lipid panels.
