Breast implant removal
Professional and safe removal using modern surgical techniques with alternative reconstruction solutions.
NextBreast implant removal for better health
Breast augmentation is the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedure. Breast implants usually give women more confidence and self-assurance, and they are proud of their fuller, firmer breasts.
However, in some cases, breast implants may need to be removed. According to FDA data, 20% of women will have their breast implants removed or replaced within 8-10 years.
The removal of breast implants can be requested by the patient or recommended by the plastic surgeon after an examination, outlining the surgical options for breast reconstruction.
The removal of implants may be due to their age, deterioration or the thickening of the capsule around the implant, or the implant may be raptured and leak into the surrounding tissues.
In some cases, a serious medical problem such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) may justify surgery.
People who are concerned about the potential risks from breast implants also often consult a specialist for an explant.
Although in the majority of cases breast implants give a more aesthetic appearance and more self-confidence, in some cases breast implants do not have the expected effect on the patient.
After the breast implant is removed, there can be an implant replacement or you can create volume with your own fat (fat transfer breast augmentation), which can be combined with a breast lift. It is also possible to have only an external or internal breast lift. In some cases, only the removal of the implant is performed.
Personalized procedure
The removal of breast implants and any volume replacement is preceded by careful planning to ensure the most natural and best result for you.
Safe and reliable implants
Our clinic has a wide range of the highest quality, completely secure implants available to replace the removed implants.
Procedure
During your initial consultation, our plastic surgeon will examine your breasts and current implant condition, assess your needs and give you detailed information about the surgical techniques and the results you can expect from the procedure. A detailed surgical plan will be prepared afterwards.
Before the operation, some mandatory tests are required: laboratory tests, ECG, chest X-ray and breast ultrasound or mammography are essential in all cases. Some diseases, medication and previous plastic surgery may also justify additional tests.
Breast implant removal is performed by our plastic surgeon under general anesthesia and requires a one-day stay in our clinic. The operation takes approximately 1-3 hours, depending on the type of procedure. Depending on the reason for the explant, the surgery can be a simple one or a more complicated procedure.
If the explant is not required due to anaplastic large cell lymphoma(ALCL) or a thickened capsule, it can be performed under local anesthesia. In this case, removal is done through the original incisions.
Breast implant replacement
In this case, a modern implant of the correct size and shape is inserted after the previous implant has been removed. At our clinic, we only use breast implants from FDA-approved manufacturers with CE mark, which are inserted using modern surgical techniques to increase their longevity.
Breast implant removal and volume restoration with fat transfer
With this procedure, approximately 200-250 cc can be replaced to achieve an overall improved size and shape. During the procedure, the surgeon uses body fat from the hips, thighs, buttocks and belly to increase the size and firmness of the breasts. After specific processing and purification, these purified fatty tissues - containing regenerative cells - are injected into the breasts.
Explant and fat transfer with breast lift
In addition to the previous procedure, a T - or vertical incision is also performed, which gives a very pleasing result, but may leave permanent scars.
Explant and breast lift without volume replacement
Our plastic surgeon will also perform a T or vertical incision. You can expect much smaller breasts after the operation. The shape of the breasts depends mainly on the surgical technique used and the adaptability of the tissues. The procedure may leave permanent scars.
Internal “Bra” Lift
A less aesthetically pleasing result can be achieved using only internal breast lift, after the implant has been removed. Without volume replacement, the result can be very small and improperly shaped breasts.
Explant
In this case, our surgeon removes the implant as well as part or all of the capsule during the operation. No aesthetic result can be expected from this procedure, however, after 3-6 months it is possible to have breast augmentation again, breast lift or fat transfer augmentation.

Breast implant removal is recommended in the following cases:
- an implant that is more than 10 years old, and has become old and worn-out
- defective implant
- implant dislocation
- implant rupture and/or leakage
- thickening of the capsule around the implant
- anaplastic large cell lymphoma(ALCL)
- breast implants are not suitable
- fear of implant complications
Regular medication can be taken before the procedure, but it is essential to consult your plastic surgeon if you are taking anticoagulant medication (e.g. aspirin). Alcohol and smoking should be avoided before and after surgery as they can interfere with the body's ability to heal properly.
The recovery time after breast implant removal is faster than the recovery time after breast augmentation. There is minimal pain after the procedure, which can be relieved with non-prescription painkillers.
For a few weeks after the operation, you should avoid heavy physical activity and lifting, but you can return to your everyday activities within 3-4 days after the operation. Of course, this depends mainly on the type of surgery. For example, if the capsule is also removed during the operation, the recovery time will be longer and more painful compared to the previous breast augmentation surgery.
If the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, the operation is completely painless. Under local anesthesia, the injection may cause discomfort and there may be a sensation of pressure or stinging during the procedure.
If the implant is removed through the original incision, there will be no pain. However, in case of capsule removal, moderate pain may be experienced for 3-5 days after the procedure.
This depends mainly on the type of procedure that has been done. In case of a breast implant replacement, the surgical site should not be exposed to water for 1 week after the operation. You will need to wear a special compression bra for 2 months. During this time, the surgical site may be swollen and have oedema, but the swelling will gradually decrease as the area recovers. In order to prevent the breast implant from moving after the operation, it is recommended to sleep on your back for three months to allow the capsule around the implants to strengthen. No sports or physical activity involving intensive movement of the shoulder and pectoral muscles is recommended for six weeks. Soaking the wound is contraindicated for 2 months after wound healing, but showering is allowed. It is also important to avoid direct exposure to UV rays, so avoid sunbathing and tanning/solarium as this can have a negative effect on scarring. Sauna use is also not recommended.
Implant removal is a safe surgery with minimal risks, but complications can occur in very rare occasions.
These include:
- bleeding, inflammation, infection
- prolonged pain
- skin and fat necrosis
- Fluid accumulation (seroma)
- asymmetry
- numbness, insensibility in the nipple and aerola area
- sagging, inflexible breast tissue
- smaller breasts than expected
- keloid, hypertrophic or atrophic scarring
- inflammation of the surgical scar
Implants are becoming more and more advanced and their lifespan is constantly increasing. Depending on the type, they can be worn safely for up to 20 years. Polyurethane-coated implants can last a lifetime. The most durable are the modern, cohesive gel-filled and textured implants, which most manufacturers offer a lifetime guarantee. Of course, there are also shorter-lasting implants, which are designed to last for around 10 years. It is always worth asking about this during a personal consultation with a plastic surgeon to decide on the best possible breast implant.
