What might be the cause of excessive sweating?

Sweating is a natural process, but extreme, excessive sweating can bring uncomfortable moments into your life.

It is called primary hyperhidrosis when there is no medical problem behind the overactive sweat glands. In secondary hyperhidrosis, the sweating is triggered by a medical condition, such as a hormonal, neurological or internal medicine disorder. In such cases, the disease should always be treated first, because sweating is just a side effect of a larger problem.

In many cases, the amount of sweating is simply a matter of genetics, but it can also be caused by stress or psychological factors.

The perfect solution: botox for sweating

In cases of primary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can be effectively treated with botox: the botulinum toxin can completely eliminate extreme sweating for months. Sweat is a fluid from the skin's glands, and botulinum toxin can block the glands that produce sweat. In fact, it is a natural bacterial protein which, in small amounts, blocks the transmission of impulses between nerve endings and sweat glands, and therefore the sweating itself.

A quick and effective treatment

Procedure

Botox is a quick procedure: it takes about 15 minutes to treat an area, which is why it can be done immediately after the consultation. At the beginning of the treatment, the skin is cleaned and disinfected thoroughly, and then botulinum toxin is injected into the skin using tiny needle punctures. The more times you do the treatment, the longer the effect will last and the less sweating will occur. There is minimal discomfort, some minor bruising or soreness may occur, but this will disappear within a very short time. The effects of the treatment can be noticed after just a few days, but a minimum of 2 weeks is needed for the final result.

Frequently Asked Questions

The treatment is recommended for people between the ages of 18 and 65 who are bothered by increased sweating in the armpits, palms or feet. It is very important to note that if you have a specific medical condition such as diabetes, menopause or hyperthyroidism that is causing the excessive sweating, then Botox should not be the solution, but rather the treatment of the medical problem.

The treatment involves the use of Dysport ( Type A botulinum toxin), which is a prescription product authorized by the Medicines and Healthcare Administration. Our experienced doctors use the substance in complete safety: it only acts on the treated areas.

A significant decrease in sweating is noticeable within 3-5 days after the treatment, but a minimum of 2 weeks is needed for the final results to be achieved. The effects of Botox usually last 3-4 months, but this may vary from person to person. The more times you repeat the procedure, the longer you will feel the effects. There should be a break of at least 3 months between treatments.

Botox does not damage the nerve endings in the long term, so it is safe to repeat the treatment as many times as you like. However, without repeated treatments, the affected area will return to its original state after a period of time.

The treatment should not be used in case of pregnancy, breastfeeding, febrile illness and active skin disease, or in case of sensitivity or allergy to botulinum toxin. Also, the procedure should not be performed in case of autoimmune diseases, musculoskeletal and neurological problems.

There may be some minor bruising and swelling at the site of the Botox injections and a slight feeling of discomfort due to the injected substance, but these will disappear within a few days. You may also experience occasional headaches, tingling and nausea. For a few days after the treatment, avoid intense physical activity, exposure to thermal factors (e.g. solarium, sunbathing, saunas), alcohol and deodorant. Waxing and massaging the underarms is also prohibited for at least 1 week.
